i-PRO Corner Camera Wins Good Design Award

Tokyo, Japan, October 17, 2024 – i-PRO Co., Ltd. (formerly a division of Panasonic), a global leader in professional security and public safety solutions, today announced that its corner camera has won the 2024 Good Design Award, organized by Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JPD, a public interest incorporated foundation).

For many years, i-PRO has been developing cameras that ensure security and safety. This is the first instance that a product designed by i-PRO has won the Good Design Award since becoming independent from Panasonic in 2019. In the development of this corner camera, i-PRO inspected prisons in North America. In addition to assessing the security duties of prison wardens, to better understand the requirements for cameras, we also learned of the burden placed on cameras from the behavior of prisoners in solitary confinement, including destruction or vandalization of property, and self-harm, and discovered that an inordinate amount of time was being devoted to camera maintenance. In order to address these issues, we analyzed the structure of various prisons, isolation cells, and situations ensuring security. We also examined the operation and installation methods of equipment, to develop a structure and design well-suited to the prison environment. This crime prevention network camera is designed to be installed in ceiling corners in cells, elevators, and so on to monitor entire rooms, and is intended to improve both the effectiveness of security and the safety of prisoners. The sturdy metallic body is resistant to breakage, and the structure facilitates easy exchange of components and cleaning, thereby reducing the burden on prison wardens and maintenance staff.

In conferring the award, the judges highly appraised the design and offered the following comment. “This network camera was developed in response to the demand for a camera specifically designed for North American prisons. Its sturdiness can be easily recognized in the thick stainless steel housing and the structure. The camera is sensibly designed for ceiling corner installation to remove blind spots. It features an attractive curved triangular surface, and a dividing line with rounded corners. The simplicity of installation and maintenance, along with its structure that facilitates easy cleaning and exchange of components, make this a highly versatile product created for use under harsh conditions. The universal design will allow it to withstand use in a variety of settings in the future.”

• Installation in ceiling corners helps to ensure security throughout the prison.
• It is extremely sturdy and readily installed. The structure allows for ease of cleaning, and exchange of components, and simplifies maintenance and construction.
• The rounded housing is cut into a triangular shape with minimal elements specifically as an anti-ligature design to prevent self-harm incidents.

• The sturdy outer cover of stainless steel achieves IK11+, 70J^*1 rating.
• The structure boasts improved adhesion and prevents intrusion of dust, liquids, etc. (IP66/ IP67/ IP69^*2)
• The main body is aluminum die-cast with stainless steel used in the cover. While paying attention to recyclability, we have reduced the number of components and achieved the smallest body in the industry.
